Cozumel, also known as the “Island of Swallows”, is located in the Caribbean Sea, about 50 km from Cancun, and is the largest inhabited island in Mexico. During the height of the Mayan culture’s power, it was an important religious center dedicated to Ixchel, the mother goddess, and was a compulsory place of pilgrimage for all Mayan women who wanted to give birth and have a fertile life.
